Quilts in the Garden
Monday, June 24, 2023, 6:30pm
Louis E. May Museum 1643 N Nye Avenue, Fremont

On the very warm evening of Monday June 24th, the Prairie Piecemakers held a Bed Turning event “Quilts in the Garden” at the May Museum lawn in Fremont NE. This was organized by Deb Schroeder and Susan Williams, along with other guild members who made it a very enjoyable evening!

There were tours of the beautiful museum gardens by Linda Wagner. These gardens are
attended by the May Gardeners. There was special music provided by Guild members Danielle
Smith on the French horn and Carissa Sauer on the violin. Refreshments of angel food cake with a mixed berries sauce were served. The group was welcomed by President LuAnn Franzluebbers and Susan Williams.

Deb Schroeder started the program by giving the history of Bed Turning, which started in the late1800’s. Women would work on quilts and to share them with friends they would invite them to their home. Because space was limited, they stacked the quilts on their bed. The get-together started with refreshments and time to socialize.

Then the hostess would show her quilts and talk about them as each one would be lifted off the bed. This became a very popular thing to do. For our Bed Turning, Doug and Teri Wolf generously provided three old fashioned bed frames. Ninety-two beautiful quilts along with their stories were shown to 90 guests. Deb and Susan narrated the stories and presentation. There was “eye candy” for all to enjoy! Some of these quilts will be on display at the Prairie Piecemakers Trip Through the Galaxy Quilt Show October 18 and 19th, 2024 at the First Lutheran Church in Fremont.

Members of the Prairie Piecemakers Quilt Guild extend a special thank you the May Museum for opening up their yard and gardens for this fun event!
